Built on a rock island near Alibag town, 112kms south of Mumbai, the Kulaba for is an imposing structure, measuring roughly 275 metres from north to south and 100 metres from east to west. At low tide one can walk across to the fort. The height of the fort-wall varies from 6 to 8 metres at different places. It has a wide parapet with 17 bastions. The main gateway of the fort, called Maha Darwaja, is in the north-east corner and faces the city. The teak-door had strong iron-spikes driven in them. There is also a small gate on its southern side. The masonry of the fort is without lime mortar. Inside the fort there is a fresh water tank, a well and several temples, the Ganapati temple being still in good condition. In the northern corner of the parapet, there still stand two English canons facing the open sea. To the sough of the fort was ship-dock, visible even now at low-tide.

The Kulaba fort was Shivaji’s last construction and was completed almost on the eve of his death in April, 1680. it attained importance under the Angres and was the main base of the Maratha navy. It had palaces for the members of the Angre family, houses for their officers and storing arrangements for grain and other necessities. None of the buildings have survived. The rule of the Angres, who were also known as Kulabkar, came to an end in 1840 AD.

To the north of the main for there is a small fort-like structure called sarjyakot, sometimes referred to as the 18th bastion of Kulaba. Sarjyakot was constructed to answer the artillery of hirakot situated on the Alibag shore.

In 1731 Ratnagiri (रत्नागिरी) came under the control of Satara kings; in 1818 it was surrendered to the british. A fort was built during the Bijapur dynasty and strengthened in 1670 by the Maratha king Shivaji, which is located on a headland near the harbour. It is one of the ports of the konkan coast. It has a palace where the last king of Burma, Thibaw and later Veer Savarkar were confined.
It is also believed that the Pandavas having performed their pilgrimage on the 13th year had settled in the adjourning territory of the Ratnagiri district and when the Pandavas and the Kauravas had the famous war at Kuruskshetra, the king of this region Veeravat Ray had accompanied them there.
Ratnagiri (रत्नागिरी) district is located in the southwestern part of Maharashtra State on the Arabian Sea coast. The sorrounding area is bordered by the Sahyadri Hills on the East and Arabian Sea on the West. It forms a part of the greater tract known as Konkan. This region was under the rule of the Mauryas, the Nalas, the Silaharas, the Chalukyas, the Kadambas, the Portuguese, the Marathas and subsequently the British. In 1948 the independent princely state of Sawantwadi was merged with the Indian union and in 1956 with Bombay Province. In 1960 with the creation of Maharashtra, Ratnagiri became a district. In 1981 Ratnagiri district was bifurcated and the new district of Sindhudurg was created.
Ratnagiri has nine tahsils ; Mandangad, Dapoli, Khed, Chiplun, Guhagar, Sangameshwar, Ratnagiri, Lanja and Rajapur. Chief rivers in Ratnagiri are the Shastri, Bor, Muchkundi, Kajali.
Ratnagiri is the district headquarters. It is the birth place of Lokmanya Tilak and many other eminent personalities.
Ratnagiri is noted for the delicious golden Haapus हापुस [Alphonso] mangos. The heavy rainfall results into highly eroded landscape in the coastal region. Fertile alluvial valleys produce rice and coconut as the main crops; fruits and cashewnut cultivation is being promoted.

Roha city is situated on the bank of the river Kundalika.Roha has been made famous on the world map by these two personalities-Shri Pandurang Shastri Athavle & Dr.CD.Deshmukh.he main attraction of Roha is the Dhavir temple,constructed by Balwantrao Vithoji More in 1849.In veiw of this temple Roha has been declared a religious destination by the Government of Maharashtra.Since the British regime there was a practice of giving 'Salami' to this temple and it is still carried out every year on the next day of 'Dusshera'. Roha was the buisness centre from olden days and the start of railway service in April 1985 gave it an added industrial importance.Many big companies have their manufacturing plants here like PEPSI,CLARIANT,SUDARSHAN,NIRLON,EXCEL, UNICHEM LABORATORIES etc.Late Shri Pandurang Shastri Athavle-rewarded by the coveted Magasaysay Award was born in Roha.Former Late Finance Minister of India Dr.CD Deshmukh was brought up as a child in Roha itself. Roha has also successfully hosted the "82nd Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Natya Sammelan.Roha is located just three hours from Mumbai.You can reach there by bus or train.For people who love adventure Roha is a great place."Avchitgad" a small fort nearby is a very good site for trecking and rapling.Other sites include Vardhayani waterfall,place called Lander and Talaghar waterfall, where you can expereince nature very closely,are spectacular sites.Not many people know about Vardhayani,but it is a great place for a one day trip just 15 minutes from Roha, you can also enjoy night stay there provided the required things are carried,for eg.tent,food,utensils etc. Other then this sites the famous temple of Shri Ballaleshwar,one of the eight gods in Ashtavinayak is also very near.

तळे गावाच्या पश्चिमेस देवाच्या डोंगराच्या पूर्वेकडील तुटक शिखरावर, 304.8 मी. उंचीचा हा गड आहे.चढण्यास सर्व वाजूंनी उंच व अवघड वाटत असला तरी सुमारे 60 मीटर वर गेल्यावर पूर्व, दक्षिण व उत्तर बाजूंनी उंच व अवघड वाटतो. पूर्वेकडे कडयाच्या खाली तटबंदी आहे. कडयाच्या खाली उत्तर बाजूस पडक्या स्थितीतील हनुमान दरवाजा आहे. त्यासमोर कातळावर कोरलेली हनुमान मूर्ती आहे. जवळच कडयात खोदलेले टाके आहे. दरवाजाजवळ टेहळणी बुरुज आहे. या दरवाजापासून दुसरी तटबंदी सुरु होते. आग्नेय व ईशान्येस बुरुज आहेत. वरचा भाग सुमारे 365.70 मीटर लांब व 27.43 मीटर रुंद आहे. उत्तर व दक्षिण बाजूस तटबंदी असून पूर्व- पश्चिम टोकास बुरुज आहेत. पश्चिमेस गड अरुंद आहे. वरच्या भागातील दरवाजाजवळ पूर्व बाजूस बूरुज व मशिदीचे अवशेष आहेत. मशिदीपासून पश्चिमेस प्रत्येकी 1.39 चौ. मी. ची तीन टाकी आहेत. उत्तर तटबंदीस चोर दरवाजा असून तो बुजलेला आहे. पश्चिम भागात सदर कचेरीचे अवशेष, धान्य साठविण्यासाठी गुहा, सहा कोरडी पाणी टाकी व महादेवाचे पडके देऊळ आहे. सुरगडावरील कोठीसारख्या लक्ष्मी कोठीचे अवशेष आहेत. येथून गडाची रुंदी कमी होते. हा किल्ला राष्ट्रीय संरक्षित स्मारक आहे.

सन 1648 मध्ये शिवाजी महाराजांनी आदिलशहीकडून तळागड काबीज केला. आदिलशाही सरदार अफझलखानाच्या स्वारीच्या वेळेस सीदीने या गडाला वेढा दिला होता. परंतु खानाचा वध झाल्याचे समजताच त्याने वेढा उठविला. सन 1665 च्या पुंदर तहानुसार हा किल्ला शिवाजी महाराजांकडे राहिला. सन 1735 मध्ये पहिल्या बाजीराव पेशव्याने किल्ला काबीज केला होता. त्याच वर्षीच्या सीदी-मराठे तहानुसार गडाची मालकी मराठयांकडे राहिली. कर्नल प्रॉथरने 17 एप्रिल 1818 रोजी या गडाचा पाडाव केला.
